"It’s not how much we do, but how much love we put in the doing. It is not how much we give, but how much love we put in the giving."

DIOCESAN ADMINISTRATOR'S MESSAGE

This has been a most memorable year for the Diocese of Salt Lake City and for The Catholic Foundation of Utah as well. We said goodbye to The Most Reverend George Niederauer as he moved to California to become the Archbishop of San Francisco. We began preparations to welcome our new bishop, in the hospitable tradition of the Catholic community of Utah.

During the century our eight bishops have shepherded the diocese, we have experienced great growth and unity in our burgeoning diversity. The Catholic Foundation of Utah is a significant result of our growing maturity as a local church. We are moving from dependence upon outside support to self-sufficiency, provided by the generosity of the people of Utah.

As you will note in this Annual Report, we recognize many new faces of contributors who help provide for the future works of the Church. Seventeen new endowments have been established, celebrating the vision of securing future financial needs while simultaneously providing current funds to endowment beneficiaries through an annual distribution. This year a five percent distribution was made available to beneficiaries of permanent endowments.

Four pillars have been established for The Catholic Foundation of Utah: Expansion of Facilities and Programs – Bishop’s Future Fund; Funding for Catholic Schools and Youth Ministry – Youth Ministry and Education Fund; Education for the Priesthood – Seminarian and Priestly Formation Fund; Supporting our Rural Church Communities – Rural Church Development and Missionary Outreach Fund. These continue to be the focus that resonates hope and shared opportunity for our future.

Let me express my gratitude and admiration for the many priests, deacons, religious, lay men and lay women working in Utah for their devotion and commitment. I am thankful for the gifts of time, talent and treasure given by Foundation donors. I am grateful for the leadership and work of the Foundation’s Board of Trustees and staff at the Pastoral Center. We are a people of hope, looking to the great opportunities of the future with enthusiasm and confidence. During this time of transition, we continue to be the people of God, the Church of Utah, bearing witness to Christ the Light.

Sincerely in Christ,

Reverend Monsignor J. Terrence Fitzgerald
Diocesan Administrator
