Government Liaison, Peace and Justice Ministry

The Government Liaison represents a Catholic viewpoint at local, state and national levels of government.  Information and workshops on legislative issues and the legislative process are available to enable Catholics to become more involved in public policy decisions.

The Peace and Justice Commission seeks to educate, inspire, and activate all peoples to work for justice and peace.

Catholic Advocacy

Catholics may join the diocesan advocacy efforts on issues related to Catholic social teaching. The links below provide information on forming the individual Catholic conscience regarding policital issues, a list of current legislative efforts, and tips for engaging in advocacy. NEW2018 CANDIDATE SURVEY RESULTS:  The Diocese surveyed all 2018 candidates for Utah State House and Senate seats.  All State House and Senate candidates were asked the following questions, and provide an opportunity to explain their answers:

SANCTITY OF LIFE ISSUES:

Do you support or oppose repeal of the death penalty in Utah, leaving life without parole as the highest level of penalty? 

Do you support or oppose assisted suicide legislation? 

Do you support or oppose abortions in all cases? 

Do you support or oppose legislation that would enable family members to seek removal of firearms when an individual shows imminent signs of causing extreme harm to self or others? 

DIGNITY OF LIFE ISSUES:

Do you support or oppose Earned Income Tax Credit legislation in Utah? 

Do you support or oppose legislative efforts to expand access to and inventory of affordable housing across Utah? 

Do you support or oppose paid family leave for family members caring for a new or adopted child, or elderly or disabled family member? 

CARE OF CREATION ISSUES:

Do you support or oppose legislative efforts to encourage renewable energy development? 

Do you support or oppose legislative efforts to improve Utah's air and water quality through reasonable business regulation? 

Do you support or oppose preservation of Utah's public lands for conservation?

  • Farm Bill:  Support farmers, food and food security programs in the Farm Bill. The Farm Bill is an omnibus $500 billion piece of legislation that affects not just farm communities around the country and the world, but urban and suburban areas as well. This comprehensive legislation is really a farm, food, environment, energy, and rural development bill. The lastest version, HR 2, includes harmful changes to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program that would harm families struggling to put food on the table.   Take Action NOW
     
  • Nourish Change! A campaign to prevent and end hunger.Urge your congress person to reauthorize and fund critical programs that prevent and end hunger.  Did you know 1 in 9 people worldwide do not have enough to eat? When people live in extreme poverty, are forced to flee their homes and livelihoods to escape violence, or endure increasing natural disasters, hunger and malnutrition follow and quickly threaten health.
  • Support H.R. 4796, the Uniting and Securing America (USA) Act of 2018.This legislation provides a path to citizenship for Dreamers and focuses on greater border security through digital technology rather than establishing physical barriers which require significant funding. One-page Backgrounder.
